I got my first L’Oréal Color Riche Lipstick as part of the L’Oréal free gift promotion, at Boots during the Christmas period. I was really impressed with the packaging and the quality of the product itself, and made a mental note to purchase more from the same range.
Fast forward to last Friday (March the 27th) and it was the 30th “birthday” of L’Oréal’s Color Riche Lipsticks so for one day only they were reduced to £3 (normally £6.99) at Superdrug. On top of this fabulous offer, Superdrug also had a ‘3 for 2’ on all L’Oréal products. So what did I do? I ordered six lipsticks for the wonderful price of £12 – it was a no-brainer really (which I had to explain to HD whilst placing the order, judging by the look of confusion on his face as to why I needed more lipsticks)! For once my procrastination actually paid off, and I made a saving of nearly £30.00!
The shades on offer were the Color Riche 30 years shades, so a lot of the newer, more popular shades were not a part of this promotion. My parcel arrived yesterday and as you can imagine, I was very excited. Here are the six shades I purchased, along with my original one:
Beautiful, aren’t they? I was eager to swatch them but at the same time, they looked so pretty, I didn’t want to spoil them. I love the excitement of shopping online and waiting for your order to arrive, but nothing beats going into an actual store and swatching the makeup before you commit. In the UK, we can’t return makeup, for hygiene purposes (although I recently discovered Bobbi Brown allow it with their foundations), so it makes shopping online a bit of a gamble. I hope these swatches can help you decide which shade is for you. Please ignore my shabby application, I didn’t use a lipliner so you can see the true colour of the lipstick.
461 Scarlett Creme: This is the first one I got (as part of the free gift), and I was really impressed by it. The formula of this lipstick is creamy and moisturising. It applies beautifully, and is quite pigmented, with a satin finish. I only applied one layer in the swatch above, but it can be built up for a richer finish.
632 Greige Amoureux: I was really excited about this shade. It was the first one I added to my shopping cart, because it looked like the perfect browny-pink nude – my favourite kind of nude! But alas, it was not. This lipstick is very sheer and doesn’t show up on my dark lips. I had to apply several layers to get any colour payoff. It’s also a frost finish, and has chunks of glitter in it, that remained on my lips, even after I wiped the lipstick off. Needless to say, I was most disappointed by this lipstick.
136 Flamingo Elegance: This is another one I was disappointed by – the colour in the bullet and the colour on my lips are miles apart. The lipstick is a sheer, creamy formula, which I had to build up a lot, to get it to show up on my lips. However, I do like the finish of this lipstick and am sure I can make it work, in conjunction with other lip products.
431 Fuchsia Declaration: This is another frost finish but thankfully, does not have any glitter chunks in it. It’s not as sheer as the previous two lipsticks, but not as opaque as I thought it would be. This shade is perfect for adding a bit of colour to your lips for daily use, or can be built up to create a more intense look.
640 Erotique: This lipstick has a matte finish, however it’s very creamy and not drying like some matte lipsticks can be. It’s easy to apply and is quite opaque – only one to two layers are needed. It is a brown nude, but with orange undertones which stop it from looking dull. This is definitely one of my favourites.
364 16 Place Vendôme: This lipstick is the most similar to my original red one (no.461), in texture and finish. It is creamy, moisturising and opaque, with a satin finish. It is darker in colour than the 461 – a beautiful, rich, wine red.
430 Mon Jules: I left this one to swatch last, as I thought it was the darkest one, but was pleasantly surprised to find it is actually similar to the colour I had hoped it would be when I ordered it – a dark, berry colour. It is another matte finish, but like the 640, is incredibly creamy. Don’t let the colour in the bullet scare you, it’s beautiful!
Here are all the swatches side by side, so it’s easier for you to compare. I’ve also included a picture of my lips with no lipstick on, for reference.
My verdict: The formula of all the lipsticks are creamy and moisturising, which I guess is what the ‘Color Riche’ is all about. They don’t bleed, but I would recommend using a lip liner for neater application and to prolong the wear, especially with the darker colours. I have kept the darker matte lipstick on, and after four hours it still looks as good as it did when I first applied it, and doesn’t feel dry. The lighter colours didn’t look that good on me, but would look great on less pigmented lips. The packaging is simple, elegant, and beautiful. I would definitely pay the full £6.99 for one of these.
Do you have any of these shades? The bottom four are my favourites, in particular, the two mattes. Which do you like? Is there another shade that you have, and recommend? Let me know your thoughts.
