If Engineers Are Nerds, Then Nerds Must Be Cool!

When I say I have an interest in Engineering… It’s actually a bit more than that. I have a BSc and MSc in Engineering. It was my chosen career path, not by chance, but by choice. I love Engineering. I’m fascinated by how things work. When I was ten or eleven our karaoke machine stopped working (yes, we had a karaoke machine), so I unscrewed the back (with permission, of course) and noticed a loose connection in the circuit board. Five minutes with the pliers and some electrical tape, and pish pash posh, I’ve never looked back! (Pish pash posh – wth? I’ve NEVER said that before… What a time to start…)

So anyway, I was watching ‘The Big Bang Theory’ and as much as I love it, I always get really worked up when Howard gets teased for being an Engineer. I don’t know why I let it bother me so much because Sheldon is Sheldon and thinks he is superior to everyone but still it does. Thinking about it, I had an uncle who was an Engineer, and he had a pencil case with mechanical pencils, a cool compass (I was a kid, I thought it was cool) and various other bits and pieces in it. I used to play with it all the time, and being one of those kids that memorises everything, I still remember exactly what it was like. It was yellow with red lining around the zip. It had black graffiti type writing all over it and said things like ‘Tuten Kamen was a mummy’s boy’ and ‘Yesterday I couldn’t spell Engineer and now I is one’. Whilst the former still makes me chuckle, it’s the latter that I have a problem with.

The stereotype attached to Engineers is that we’re not good at spelling, we don’t have any creative vision, we’re boring, we’re nerds etc. Naturally I have to disagree.

I leave you with a few quotes that make me smile:

“Engineering is a form of art and has filled the world with things of obvious visual beauty but also with subtle forms.” Louis Brown

“To the optimist, the glass is half full. To the pessimist, the glass is half empty. To the engineer, the glass is twice as big as it needs to be.” Unknown

“The problem in this business isn’t to keep people from stealing your ideas: it’s making them steal your ideas!” Howard Aiken

“Engineering stimulates the mind. Kids get bored easily. They have got to get out and get their hands dirty: make things, dismantle things, fix things. When the schools can offer that, you’ll have an engineer for life” Bruce Dickinson

“Scientists investigate that which already is; Engineers create that which has never been.” Albert Einstein

“Scientists dream about doing great things. Engineers do them.” James A. Michener

“When you want to know how things really work, study them when they’re coming apart.” William Gibson

“A good scientist is a person with original ideas. A good engineer is a person who makes a design that works with as few original ideas as possible. There are no prima donnas in engineering.” Freeman Dyson

Bottom line: Engineers are cool. Trust me, I’m an Engineer! 😉

  1. I absolutely love this. I am an engineer in my heart. I was groomed and directed that way for all the wrong reasons. (Money & the need for more minorities)
Even though I didn’t complete my Pulp and Paper with Chemical engineering degree. I discovered other passions. I love problem solving with the best of them.
I love nerds, engineers, scientists, but I also love music, musicals, art!

    Thanks for sharing! ♡

    1. Aw thank you. Glad you like it.
I don’t think anyone can, or should, be categorised by one attribute. Who says someone with a creative mind can’t be analytical and good at problem solving, and vice versa?
      Have a nice day 🙂

  2. Thanks for the like on my reblog. I spent 17 years teaching Control Systems and Real Time computing to engineers. fascinating, practical and very mathematical.
My two sons are engineers and loving it.

  3. Amazing blog and an amazing post.
We’re also Engineers and it is something we love as much as we love the sight of a pretty girl inside our college campus. I think one post of yours is equal to 67937764846 of ours in terms of number of lines and content. Keep posting! I’ll be looking forward for them! Cheers!

  4. I too love working in Engineering and sometimes can’t shut about it.

I’ve always been full of questions and its fascinating (for me anyway), figuring out how stuff actually works.

It’s nice to stumble across like minded people 🙂
